Dear Friends,
Among the news headlines is the announcement of the awarding of the first SIM/Mercer Challenge scholarship to Jason Roberson of the Episcopal Church in South Carolina.
The Mercer Fund of the Diocese of Long Island is pleased to make this presentation in cooperation with SIM, the Society for the Increase of Ministry founded in 1857. The Mercer Fund, founded almost a century later by Helen Mercer in memory of her late husband George, has for almost sixty years supported candidates for priesthood both within the Diocese of Long Island and across the Episcopal Church.
We are pleased now to commit funds this year to this new opportunity to seek out and support the best candidates for ministry as priests. Helen Mercer’s visionary bequest looked to a time when all those offering themselves for ordained ministry would not be burdened after ordination by educational debt. We have not yet arrived at that happy juncture, but it is our hope that this effort of SIM and Mercer together will encourage individuals and organizations across the life of the Episcopal Church to make their own commitment of energy, ingenuity, and yes – dollars - to this worthy effort.

Congratulations Jason.
